Character vs Personality: Why Children Must Know the Difference

Child learning about character vs personality at Champions Character programme.

Champions Character teaches children the power of character over personality

One of the most important lessons we can teach our children is the difference between personality and character.

Stephen Covey begins his famous book The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People by explaining this exact difference. Personality can be like a mask we put on — how we appear to others, how we act when people are watching, the skills we use to influence or impress. Character, however, runs much deeper. It’s who we are when no one is looking.

Why this matters for children

Children live in a world that often celebrates personality — how many likes you get, how popular you seem, how well you fit in. But without a strong character, personality is fragile.

    • Personality Example: Pretending to be someone’s friend, smiling and laughing with them… but then talking about them behind their back.

    • Character Example: Being a true friend who stays loyal, keeps confidence, and stands up for others.

When children learn to value character over personality, they become people who can be trusted, respected, and looked up to — not just for a moment, but for life.

Why Covey says habits matter even more today

People often ask, “Are the 7 Habits still relevant today?” Covey’s answer is simple: the bigger the change, the more the habits are relevant.

And hasn’t childhood changed?

    • More pressure.

    • More screens.

    • More comparisons.

Now, more than ever, children need principles and habits rooted in character — so they can navigate challenges with confidence and integrity.

Champions Character – why we call it that

At Kicx, we built our whole programme around this idea. We call it Champions Character for two reasons:

    1. Champions – because I know what it takes to be a world champion in martial arts. I’ve stood on those stages, travelled the world, and learned that success without character is hollow.

    1. Character – because unlike personality, which fades when the lights are off, character is permanent. It’s the foundation of leadership, friendship, resilience, and true confidence.

That’s why we say: build character first — the rest will follow.

A powerful gift for your child

When parents give their children the gift of character, they give them:
✅ The ability to choose right over easy.
✅ The courage to be themselves in any crowd.
✅ The strength to lead with honesty and kindness.

And that’s why, inside our Champions Character programme, we help children not just “act confident” but be confident. Not just “look focused” but live focused. Not just “make friends” but become the kind of friend everyone wants to have.

Because personality might open the door… but character is what keeps it open.
