At Kicx Academy in Churchdown, Gloucester, we don’t just teach kids martial arts — we teach them how to think like champions.
Through our Kids Martial Arts Gloucester classes, children learn that mistakes aren’t failures — they’re feedback, helping them grow stronger in mind and body.
Many children (and adults!) struggle when things don’t go perfectly. They feel upset, embarrassed, or think they’re “not good enough.”
(For more guidance on helping children build confidence and resilience, visit the NSPCC’s official advice for parents.)
Why? Because of what psychologists call demanding thoughts — those little inner voices that say:
“I must get everything right.”
“If I don’t win, I’ve failed.”
“Everyone else is better than me.”
These thoughts create pressure. They make kids demand success instead of develop success.
But the truth is this: mistakes are not the enemy. They are the teacher.
Mistakes = Progress
Think about Thomas Edison. He didn’t invent the light bulb on the first try — he failed over 1,000 times before success. When asked about it, he said:
“I didn’t fail 1,000 times. The light bulb was an invention with 1,000 steps.”
Or take Michael Jordan, the greatest basketball player of all time, who missed over 9,000 shots and lost nearly 300 games. He said,
“I’ve failed over and over again in my life, and that is why I succeed.”
And closer to home, J.K. Rowling, the British author of Harry Potter, was rejected by 12 publishers before one finally said yes. Today, her books have inspired millions of children to believe in magic — and in themselves.
Each of these people shows us that mistakes aren’t the end — they’re just part of the path to greatness.

The 5 Rules to Winning
1. Go to Win
We don’t mean win at all costs — we mean show up with a winning mindset. Aim high, give your best, and commit to the performance in front of you. If your child comes last, who cares? Going to win means believing in yourself, focusing, and playing full out. That mindset is what builds real confidence on the mats and in life.
2. Effort
Outcomes aren’t fully in our control — effort is. We coach process goals: “hands up,” “breathe,” “try the combo again.” Praise what they can control — their attention, hustle, and grit. At Kicx Academy, effort is tracked and celebrated (tags, belts, progress charts) because consistent effort compounds into skill and self-belief.
3. Team
True champions lift others. We cheer classmates’ wins, help partners improve, and show respect even when it’s tough. Team means empathy, encouragement, and leadership — the heart of our Champions Character Programme. When the team gets better, everyone gets better.
(Our Champions Character Programme is inspired by the principles of The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People by Stephen R. Covey.)
4. Fun
Joy fuels consistency. When training feels fun, kids try more, risk more, and learn faster — especially after a wobble or a fall. We keep sessions upbeat and game-based so children associate challenge with curiosity, not fear. That’s how confidence sticks long after class.
5. Learn
If it didn’t go to plan, that’s feedback. Every setback holds a message — if you listen for it.
We teach kids that mistakes aren’t something to hide from; they’re something to learn from.
Remember: feedback is the fuel of champions.
Parents can back this up with a quick “Car Chat Champion” conversation on the way home: one win, one lesson, one small step to improve tomorrow.
Failing Forward: The Champion’s Mindset
At Kicx Academy, we call this failing forward — using mistakes as momentum.
When a child misses a kick, forgets a move, or struggles to tie their belt — it’s not failure. It’s feedback.
They’re learning grit, patience, and the courage to keep trying.
That’s what makes martial arts so powerful. Every belt, every tag, every challenge teaches kids how to bounce back — stronger, smarter, and more confident.
Here in Gloucester, we see this every week — from children earning their first belt at our Churchdown dojo to local school pupils learning about perseverance through our Champions Character Programme. When kids learn to fail forward, they thrive not only in class but in school, friendships, and family life too.
Inspiration from Gloucester: Jamie McDonald (Adventureman)
One Gloucester-native who embodies the spirit of failing forward is Jamie McDonald — also known as Adventureman. Born in Gloucester, Jamie has overcome serious personal health challenges (including immune deficiency and epilepsy) as a child, yet he’s become a world-famous adventurer and motivational speaker. Wikipedia
He’s run thousands of miles dressed as his superhero alter-ego, cycled 14,000 miles from Bangkok to Gloucester, and used his challenges as fuel, not excuses. Wikipedia
His story reminds us: the bumps, the failures, the hard days — they don’t define you. What matters is what you do next. And when kids see someone from their own city doing that, the idea that they too can bounce back and win becomes real, not distant.
Parent Tip: Celebrate the Tries, Not Just the Wins

“That’s great — you just learned something new!”
This simple shift helps your child see effort as the path to mastery. It teaches them that progress matters more than perfection.
