When parents think about Kids Martial Arts in Gloucester, most picture kicking, punching, and fun classes that build confidence. But there’s a much deeper story behind the art your child is learning — a story that stretches back hundreds of years, crosses oceans, and eventually leads to our little community here in Churchdown.
Karate isn’t just a sport.
It’s a lineage, a tradition, and a character-building journey that has shaped millions of lives — including mine.
Today, I want to give you a simple, family-friendly walk through the history of karate, how Wado-Ryu came to the UK, and exactly where Kicx Academy fits into that story.
Where Karate Truly Began — Okinawa 🇯🇵
Karate’s roots stretch back to the tiny island of Okinawa, where local self-defence systems blended with influences from nearby China. At this time, weapons were banned, so ordinary people developed empty-handed fighting skills known as Te.
This slowly evolved into early karate.
Across the 1800s, three main styles emerged in Okinawa:
- Shuri-Te
- Naha-Te
- Tomari-Te
These became the foundations of all modern karate.
The Birth of Wado-Ryu — Peace Over Power ✨
In the early 1900s, a brilliant martial artist named Hironori Ohtsuka studied these Okinawan systems.
But he also trained in Japanese jujutsu, giving him a unique blend of striking, movement, joint locks, and body evasion.
Instead of relying on force, he built a style based on:
- moving with energy
- using timing over strength
- stepping offline
- blending jujutsu and karate principles
He called it Wado-Ryu — “The Way of Harmony.”
This is the karate style that eventually reached the UK… and is the root of what we practise today.
How Wado-Ryu Came to the UK — Suzuki & Takamizawa 🇬🇧
In the early 1960s, two incredibly important teachers left Japan to introduce Wado-Ryu to Europe:
Tatsuo Suzuki
A senior Japanese instructor who pioneered Wado-Ryu across the world.
He became one of the most influential karate men ever to teach in Europe.
Toru Takamizawa
A respected teacher who built Wado-Ryu across the UK.
He settled here, trained thousands of students, and shaped the future of British karate for decades.
Their arrival created a movement — clubs, associations, championships, and a generation of martial artists inspired by traditional values:
- discipline
- respect
- focus
- self-control
- inner strength
This is the generation that raised many of today’s instructors.
Where Kicx Academy Fits into This Historic Lineage 🥋✨
This part matters — because when your child trains at Kicx Academy, they’re not just learning kicks and punches.
They are stepping into a direct line of teachers going all the way back to Japan.
The journey looks like this:
Okinawa Masters → Ohtsuka → Toru Takamizawa→ Clayton Murrain → Stephen Thompson → Kicx Academy families
I trained under Sensei Clayton Murrain, one of the great Wado-Ryu instructors in the UK — a direct student of Toru Takamizawa.
Through Clayton’s training, grading, and guidance, I continued this lineage, eventually becoming a world karate champion multiple times — but more importantly, becoming a teacher focused on character first.
Today at Kicx Academy, your child learns:
- the movement of Wado-Ryu
- the discipline of traditional karate
- the life skills that modern children need
- the Focus–Skills–Belief system through our Champions Character programme
It’s a living, breathing connection to history — adapted for today’s children and families.
Why This Matters for Your Child ❤️
Karate survived hundreds of years because it teaches values that never go out of date:
- Focus
- Respect
- Resilience
- Confidence
- Self-control
- Emotional strength
And in today’s fast, distracted world…
children need these skills more than ever.
Halfway through the journey, many parents visit for the same reason:
they want their child to grow in confidence, focus better, and learn how to manage their emotions.

From Okinawa to Churchdown — The Journey Continues 🌍
When your child bows into class, they’re stepping into something bigger than a weekly activity. They’re joining a story that began hundreds of years ago on the other side of the world… a story that travelled through great teachers, great champions, and now sits right here in Gloucester.
And I’m honoured to play a small part in continuing that legacy with your family.
FAQ for Parents
Is karate good for children with low confidence?
Absolutely. Karate builds confidence through repetition, success moments, structured progress, and positive role models. According to the NSPCC, strong self-esteem helps protect children from bullying and emotional struggles (source: https://www.nspcc.org.uk).
Does traditional karate still matter in modern times?
Yes — modern psychology shows children thrive on routine, discipline, and clear expectations. Karate provides this better than almost any other activity.
What age can children start karate?
At Kicx Academy, we start from age 3. At this age, children can begin learning focus, balance, coordination, and the foundations of discipline in a fun, playful way.
Where can I learn more about karate history?
The Japan Karate Federation and Wado-Ryu associations provide excellent historical resources.
